Licorice Slices

Licorice slices is made from the dried roots and rhizomes of the leguminous plants licorice, hoelen licorice, or smooth-leaved licorice. It is obtained through slicing and processing. It is neutral in nature and sweet in taste, and it belongs to the meridians of the heart, lung, spleen, and stomach. It is one of the commonly used medicinal materials in traditional Chinese medicine.

1. Main Effects and Indicated Symptoms

Strengthening the spleen and invigorating qi: Licorice can enhance the function of the spleen and stomach, improve symptoms such as loss of appetite and fatigue, and is often combined with astragalus, atractylodes, etc., such as in the classic formula Sijunzi Decoction.

Clearing heat and detoxifying: It is used for sore throat, mouth ulcers, etc. It can be made into a tea by itself or used in combination with honeysuckle and chrysanthemum.

Relieving cough and expectorating: The glycyrrhizic acid in licorice can relieve coughing. It is often combined with aniseed and bitter almond, such as in the Anjie Decoction.

Balancing the properties of medicines: In compound prescriptions, it can reduce the toxic effects of other drugs. For example, when used with aconite and toon, it can lower its toxicity.

II. Common Usage Methods

Traditional Chinese Medicine Formulas: As a combination of medicinal ingredients, it is used in conjunction with other drugs based on the patient's condition.

Tea Substitute: Take 3-5 grams of licorice slices and boil in hot water for brewing. It is suitable for those with dry throat and mild cough.

External Application: Grind into powder and mix with honey. It can assist in treating skin ulcers or inflammations.

Purchase: Select slices that are evenly cut, with a yellow-brown surface and a fibrous cross-section. The smell should be slightly sweet.

Storage: Store in an airtight container in a cool and dry place. Avoid moisture or direct sunlight to prevent mold growth.
